Scarlet Reef Lobster (enoplometopus occidentalis)

There are two main types of lobster which are available for the fishkeeper from time to time. The most interesting and manageable types are the Reef Lobsters. Others are represented by the Spiny Lobsters, which arrive as cute little juveniles, with bright colours and hugely disproportionately long feelers, but go on to grow into big animals better suited to the pot than the aquarium!

The Scarlet Reef Lobster is regarded as a “dwarf”, which is probably true when set alongside some of its huge relatives, but the term is misleading for an animal that can grow up to about 6 foot long. Be cautious about accepting one of these attractive creatures because they can be quite destructive in the aquarium.
