Crimson Knobbed Starfish (protoreaster linckii)

A number of starfish are routinely handled for the aquarium trade, but what appears on the market is a fraction of the whole range of tropical starfish found on the reef. A few are suitable for the reef aquarium, while others are best avoided. Brittle starfish make good scavengers, although they are nocturnal, so hide during the day and are not often seen out and about in the aquarium.

The Crimson Knobbed Starfish is a big animal, and its bold colouring and strongly contoured shape makes it eye-catching, but it can be predatory on other invertebrates in a reef tank and is best avoided for inclusion in that type of aquarium.
