Trigger fish have sharp beaks in place of conventional teeth, and are equipped to give a nasty bite to other fish, or their owner if carelessly handled! However, there are a number of species that will live peacefully and well in aquarium conditions. Obtain advice about them before you buy.
The Clown Trigger (balistoides conspicillum) is one of the most distinctively and brashly marked coral fish, and is beautifully patterned from its tiny juvenile stage right through to its large adult form. When fully mature, given space and the right company, it may be quite peaceful, but individuals vary.
The juvenile of the Jigsaw Trigger (pseudobalistes fuscus) has a strong pattern, combining a gold with electric-blue markings, and is an eye-catching beauty. It does, however, grow large and can be aggressive when mature.
